Armed with a bass-guitar, drums and a synthesizer Vincent Vendetta, Andy Juggernaut and Daniel Stricker, a.k.a. Midnight Juggernauts, became one of the best electronic live acts in 2008.

Recently they paid a visit to the Paradiso and absolutely lived up to their reputation. We only got three tracks, but it’s definitely worth watching, listening and dancing to!

  About Midnight Juggernauts:
From the moment the band was founded in 2004, they made an amazing impression with both their music and live shows. It wasn’t a surprise that the Dance Music Awards members chose Midnight Juggernauts as the best upcoming electronic band of 2007.

Midnight Juggernauts play avant-garde which is close to industrial music and is full of galactic sounds. The band is strongly influenced by the French touch of Justice, Daft Punk and Air but also of 80’s British artists like David Bowie.

The band launched their first release ‘Dystopia’ in 2007. Midnight Juggernauts’ music appeared on popular compilation albums such as Modular, Kitsune and Ministry Of Sound.

Midnight Juggernauts have composed several remixes for artists like !!! (chk chk chk), The Presets, Dragonette, Cut Copy, VHS or Beta, Electric Six, Sébastien Tellier, Damn Arms and CSS. Midnight Juggernauts also supported Justice on their American tour and shared the stage with other artist like !!!, Holy Fuck!, Crystal Castles, Klaxons and Surkin.

From the moment he was just a little boy and heard Little Richard and Muddy Watters, he was hooked to the blues. VIDEO LEFTIES SOUL CONNECTION “LIVE IN CONCERT” RELEASED ON FABCHANNEL.COM

August 21st, 2008
This definitely is Holland’s, if not the world’s, hottest funk collective at this moment. If you’re into real, raw funk with balls, you’re sure to enjoy this concert!

Amsterdam based band Lefties Soul Connection gives a new meaning to raw funk and soul music. Influenced by funk acts like The Meters and JB’s, but also by hiphop acts like Jurassic 5, The Roots and Beastie Boys, the four bring funk and soul with a hiphop sound and structure.

Organ player Alviz used to DJ at the Amsterdam Bitterzoet club, where he played raw funk music. Eventually he felt the urge to play this kind of music live, with a band. That’s why he formed Lefties Soul Connection in 2001, together with guitarist Onno. Bass player Bram and drummer Vogel completed the band. Ever since then they top the funk scene in Holland.

In 2005 Lefties Soul Connection released their cover of ‘Organ Donor’ (original by DJ Shadow) on 7 inch. Together with previous recordings, this single was released on their debut album ‘Hutspot’ in 2006. In 2007 their second album ‘Skimming the Skum’ followed.

VIDEO JENNY OWEN YOUNGS CONCERT OUT NOW!

August 21st, 2008
Jenny Owen Youngs (1981) is an American singer/songwriter from Montclair, New Jersey. On her MySpace she is described as “a feisty, hyper-sensitive, disease-free singer/songwriter/former girl scout who wants to be your friend, claiming influences from Beck to Jesus Christ Superstar to Britney Spears”. The results are splendid guitar pop songs about everything you can imagine, which won’t leave your head again.

She’s the latest addition to our extensive collection of intimate songwriter concerts like those of Laura Marling, Ane Brun and Iron and Wine. Have a look for yourselves and be mesmerised by the sounds of Jenny Owen Youngs.

Before Jenny Owen Youngs picked up the guitar at the age of 14, she had already been playing the flute and tuba. Jenny graduated at Purchase College with a degree in Studio Compositions.

Jenny Owen Youngs self-released her debut album ‘Batten The Hatches’ in 2005. Initially the album hadn’t been too successful, but after the song ‘Fuck Was I’ was used in an episode of the television series Weeds, ‘Batten The Hatches’ was re-released by the Canadian label Nettwerk in 2007.

In the meantime Jenny has been touring with Vienna Tang, Aimee Mann and Sean Hayes. She has also released a cover of Nelly’s ‘Hot In Here’.

Besides her solo career, Jenny Owen Youngs is a member of a band called The Robot Explosion and takes part in the MySpace podcast ‘Once More With Feeling’.

CONCERT VIDEO THE WAR ON DRUGS OUT NOW

August 21st, 2008
The Philadelphia based rock quintet The War On Drugs signed to the Secretly Canadian label, home of Anthony and the Johnsons and Jens Lekman, in early 2008. Shortly after they released their debut album ‘Wagonwheel Blues’. To promote their new record they came over to Amsterdam and played an excellent show at Paradiso’s small hall. You can now watch the entire gig at www.fabchannel.com/the_war_on_drugs or in the player below. Enjoy! It’s one of my favourites at this moment.

In their own words, The War On Drugs brings a dose of West Coast to the streets of Philadelphia. Their music will remind you of 80’s guitars like those of Sonic Youth and mesmerizing lyrics and vocals like those of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

The War On Drugs came into existence after several sessions between frontman Adam Granduciel and guitarist Kurt Vile, two huge Bob Dylan fans that met each other in 2003. Percussionists Kyle Loyd and Charlie Hall and bass-player Dave Hartley completed the line-up in 2005.

The Philadelphia five quickly became a familiar face in their hometown’s club scene. It didn’t take long before they were playing in New York and other cities. They finished their ‘Barrels Of Batteries’ EP in 2007, which can still be downloaded for free at the Secretly Canadian website. On year later The War On Drugs were signed and released their first record.

The B-52’s concert video new in archive!

August 6th, 2008
Some of you already noticed, but the B-52’s concert video is now available to watch in our archive! Check it out anyway. Enjoy!

  The B-52’s biography

After a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant, Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and her brother Ricky founded the new wave pop band the B-52’s in 1976. The band’s name alludes to the beehive hairdo wigs that singers Cindy and Kate were often wearing.

The Athens (U.S.) based band had little or even no experience in playing music and performed their first shows with percussion and guitar recordings on tape. After playing several shows at music club CBGB in New York, the B-52’s drew the attention of the New York press.

The B-52’s released their self-titled debut album in 1979, followed up by ‘Wild Planet’ in 1980, which reached the top 20 in the U.S. charts. After releasing ‘Mesopotamia’ in 1982 and ‘Whammy!’ in 1983, the five-piece returned to the studio to record 1986’s ‘Bouncing Off the Satellites’. During the recording of this album, Ricky Wilson died from an AIDS related illness. After his death the other band members found it impossible to promote the album.

1989’s ‘Cosmic Thing’ was the most successful recording till this date, including hit singles ‘Love Shack’, ‘Roam’ and ‘Deadbeat Club’. After releasing ‘Good Stuff’ in 1992, the B-52’s finally returned with new material in 2008 with the release of ‘Funplex’.

VIDEO UNIQUE COCOROSIE CONCERT RELEASED ON FABCHANNEL

July 22nd, 2008
On April 29th the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra teamed up with the eccentric folk duo CocoRosie for a unique concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It turned out to be a unique night.

Luckily the entire performance was recorded. The video of this recording was already released on the websites of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as well as the Concertgebouw. Now the video of the entire CocoRosie concert is also available to the world through Fabchannel.

Watch now, and see how an entire classical string orchestra sounds when combined with one of the craziest duos around.

  CocoRosie biography
CocoRosie is an American experimental folk duo. The sisters Sierra Rose Casady and Bianca Lailani Casady combine folk with electronica and hiphop, using all instruments they bump into, toys included.

The sisters got nicknamed Coco and Rosie at a young age by their mother. This is where the name CocoRosie derives from.

During their childhood the sisters had been living all over America and lost track of each other during their teens. Sierra ended up in Paris to become an opera singer and Bianca lived in Brooklyn. In 2003 Bianca paid an unannounced visit to Sierra in Paris. Ever since the two are inseparable.

Within two months they recorded the CocoRosie debut album ‘La Maison De Mon Reve’, which was released in 2004. The next year ‘Noah’s Ark’ followed and in 2007 ‘The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn’. Since that time, the band has been touring all over the world.

OUT NOW: VIDEO ELI ‘PAPERBOY’ REED PARADISO CONCERT

July 22nd, 2008
Last week we were privileged to record Eli “Paperboy” Reed’s Paradiso concert, which we now proudly present to you in our archive. This time he was playing at Paradiso’s small stage, but there’s no doubt that he will return within months and sell out the big hall.

I was among the lucky few who got a chance to squeeze themselves into the packed and sweaty hall. The world clearly got out that Eli “Paperboy” Reed is the next big thing in soul music, because the place was packed. Both the band and the audience clearly enjoyed themselves during these 70 minutes of pure soul. Now you should go and enjoy it!

  Eli “Paperboy” Reed Biography
Eli “Paperboy” Reed is a white guy from the US who surprises you with his genuine soul in the style of the great Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. His powerful voice and his own songs and arrangements bring the 60’s back to life.

Reed grew up in Brookline, MA, exposed to a wealth of music. His father was a music critic and gave him full access to his record collection. Eli Reed absorbed as much as he could. In the end it was the gospel, soul, blues and R&B that stole his heart. He taught himself to play the piano, guitar and harmonica and put his skills to test by busking the streets.

Eli Reed got at job in Mississippi where he started playing the clubs. At one point he even ended up on stage with drummer Sam Carr. It was in Mississippi that he got his nickname Paperboy, because of the newsboy style hat he wore at that time.

Back in Boston Eli Reed formed his band The True Loves and released the cover record ‘Sings “Walkin’ and Talkin’ (For My Baby)” and Other Smash Hits’ in 2005. After a successful gig at 2007’s SXSW he signed to Q Division on which he released his second record with only his own material, ‘Roll With You’.

LIVE VIDEO WEBCAST JACK MCMANUS CONCERT

July 22nd, 2008
Thursday July 24th Fabchannel will live webcast the first ever concert in the Netherlands of Jack McManus. Lucky Jack will play his first Holland gig in one the most beautiful venues of the country, Paradiso’s small hall.

Our friends at Universal Music brought this young, curly haired singer, under our attention. We were happily surprised by his fresh sounding piano pop and are more than willing to record his Paradiso show.

Have a little warm-up fun with this video we found of Jack live at a Dutch national radio station 3FM:

  Jack McManus biography
British songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jack McManus (1984) was educated at the renowned BRIT school, where he was Amy Winehouse’s classmate. Also Katie Melua, Kate Nash and Adele enjoyed their education here.

In April 2008 Jack released the single ‘Bang On The Piano’ and his debut album ‘Either Side Of Midnight’, an amenable record, stuffed with infectious piano-driven pop songs. Beside the piano, Jack McManus also plays trumpet and drums.

Jack McManus’ father introduced him to the world of rock’n roll at a young age. He was responsible for the pyrotechnics at shows of a.o. Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi. He made Jack listen to Elton John and Billy Joel who later became a great inspiration to Jack’s music.
